Bringing together people of all ages to experience the arts is the idea behind a CSU dance project called “Intersections.” The project is designed to encourage lifelong, inter-generational engagement in artistic creativity and collaboration. Intersections hosts community-based summer activities at the new CSU Arts Campus in the Middough Building, home to the Theater, Dance and Art departments.
The project is an ongoing creative outlet for community members, allowing them to interact with professional artists. Community partners include GroundWorks Dance Theater and DANCECleveland.
Over the past year, dozens of professional guest artists and CSU students have participated in the program, as well as hundreds of community members, ages 10 to 90.
Benefit to Community:
“They get to experience the joy of being in a dance class,” said Professor Lynn Deering, director of the CSU Dance Program. Deering said the program is empowering. Participants discover they can express themselves through movement. “We are recognizing more and more the need for experiences in dance for multiple generations,” said Professor Deering. “The movement and creative experiences not only provided instrumental benefits such as personal and social education and health and well-being, the biggest benefit was the community members’ involvement in making art and being artists.”
