With a four-fold increase since 1999, accidental drug overdose is the leading cause of injury-related death in Ohio. Designed to help address the heroin epidemic locally, the Safe Passages initiative is a novel intervention which allows substance abusers to voluntarily to turn themselves into police in exchange for help seeking treatment.

At the Friendly Inn Settlement, Inc. in the Central Neighborhood children find a safe space to learn and grow thanks to the organization’s after school program. Once every week for one semester, a group of students in the Occupational Therapy Program at Cleveland State University work with the children in the after school program. Their activities are aimed at creating healthy hobbies that will foster the students’ social and emotional well-being.

Each day, residents of the St. Clair Superior neighborhood walk past buildings that carry decades or centuries of fascinating, little-known Cleveland history. The buildings may be vacant and worn but certainly not devoid of stories that shed light about the origins of our city.

A class of about 20 students in the Maxine Levin Goodman College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University is working on a historic preservation project with the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation. The project is a unique collaboration among historic preservation efforts at the College.

Tragic shootings in Cleveland are all too common in local media headlines.

Shootings are the subject of a play written and directed by Cleveland State University faculty member Prester Pickett. It will be featured at Cleveland State and aims to spark community dialogue and hopefully spur citizen action to prevent these unnecessary acts of violence.

Faculty and students from the Physical Therapy Department and Occupational Therapy Department at CSU have joined forces with the City of Cleveland Department of Aging to help senior citizens become more physically and mentally active without leaving their homes. The project they have developed is called “Thrive Where You Are.” Homebound seniors may experience limited activity and engagement, which may lead to feelings of isolation.

In the spring of 2015, the Community Awareness and Prevention Association (CAPA), and Westshore Young Leaders Network (WYLN) developed and conducted a Community Perception Survey (CPS) of adult residents in the suburbs of Lakewood, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Bay Village, Westlake and North Olmsted. The survey was both anonymous and confidential. Its purpose was to assess attitudes and opinions about substance abuse and prevention efforts of WYLN. The anonymous data was then sent to Cleveland State University for compilation and analysis.

When state-tested nursing assistants (STNA) work with older adults, they aim to help the clients they serve in physically demanding ways such as repositioning the resident in bed, or moving him or her from the bed to a wheelchair. But there are risks they take with the job that may result in injuries, many of which are preventable.

The Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at CSU and Maseno University in Kenya are collaborating on a project that will increase the amount of digital content available about the history of locations in Kisumu, the third largest city in Kenya, said project co-director and CSU professor Dr. Mark Souther, who is working with project co-director Dr. Meshack Owino, also in the History Department.
